Montana Day Trips: The Old West
by Michele Kadison

Here is a day trip that will take you back to the early days of the west. Taking the drive from Bozeman to the Lewis & Clark Caverns makes for a great excuse to do some serious exploring. Then you can move on to some of the nearby ghost towns, or take your time to fish or spend some time in the local hot springs.
Hop on Interstate 90 west until you arrive at the exit for Highway 287. Head south until you get to the Lewis & Clark Caverns, a total of 37 miles from Bozeman.
From here, go to Highway 2 going west until you arrive at Whitehall. Take Highway 55 south until it merges with Highway 41 where you will continue south to Twin Bridges, a mere 35 miles. This town is situated at the convergence of three rivers and is the perfect place to get out the rod and reel for some serious fly-fishing fun.
Drive another 28 miles to Virginia City by taking Highway 287 south. Here you will get a true feel for the Old West as you wander among the well preserved buildings that speak of bygone days.
Back on Highway 287 for another 14 miles will take you to Ennis. Enjoy the quaint shops and charming byways and then take advantage of the fly-fishing, which is something the area is famous for.
From Ennis to Norris, you will drive 16 miles on Highway 287 heading north. Not to be missed for its hot springs, take some time to relax and soak in the minerals that will dissolve every last tense cell in your body.
Return to Bozeman by going east on Highway 84 until you arrive relaxed and inspired and ready for your next adventure.
