Montana best of skiing: top 5 ski resorts

Our choices for the 5 best ski and snowboard resorts in Montana

There are several reasons you may want to consider a Montana ski vacation. A lot of Montana’s mountains are at a lower elevation than other ski resorts in the Rockies, but they are further north than most. Consequently, you’ll get the same low temperatures that lead to fine powder snow, without the high altitude that will slow you down.

Ski mountains here offer great opportunities for a variety of terrain, making Montana skiing great for both families and extreme skiers. On most Montana mountains, out-of-bounds skiing and snowboarding are legal, at your own risk. You’ll also find excellent terrain parks, great places to stay, and everything else you need on a true Montana vacation.

  1. Whitefish Mountain Resort: Known as Big Mountain until 2007, the same year that several million dollars were invested in the resort, adding new high speed quad lifts, and an awesome new lodge. Here you’ll find an excellent terrain park, great back country skiing and beautiful Montana lodges.
  2. Big Sky Resort: Offering some of the biggest in Montana ski vacations, Big Sky has 22 lifts, 150 runs, and 5,000 acres of ski terrain. Montana lodges and restaurants abound, as do opportunities for more winter activities.
  3. Bridger Bowl: Excellent smaller resort for great powder skiing and an “away from the crowds” feel. Bridger has 71 runs, 2000 skiable acres and 8 lifts, including a new high speed quad. Excellent place for beautiful Montana lodges and restaurants to enjoy during down time.
  4. Montana Snowbowl: This is an excellent, little-known ski resort outside of one of Missoula, one of the most enjoyable cities in Montana. It’s fairly small, with just 950 acres, 4 lifts and 39 runs, but you’ll never have to worry about crowds much, and it gets excellent snow. Nearby Missoula has all the great Montana lodges and restaurants to make you vacation complete.
  5. Blacktail Mountain: Another great Montana secret, Blacktail gets world class snow, has excellent trails, but without any of the crowds you’ll find in the Rockies. Blacktail has 24 runs and four lifts. Great Montana lodging and restaurants can be found in nearby towns such as Lakeside or Kalispell.
