Helena, Montana is a wonderful place in Montana to learn about history as well as get outside and do some hiking, fishing, boating and skiing. Although the town is Montana’s capital city and known for its unique history and beautiful historic downtown, it is also perfectly situated for outdoor recreation. It is close to the Missouri River and the Helena National Forest and has several lakes minutes from town.

  • Moose Creek Campground is a very pleasant spot in the Helena National forest. It is 10 miles west of Helena, Montana on Highway 12, then South on Rimini Road. It is free. Call (406) 449-5490.
  • Canyon Ferry Lake Campgrounds are 20 miles east of town and are maintained by the Bureau of Land Management. They are free or for a small fee. Call (406) 533-7600.
