Philipsburg, Montana Vacations
Philipsburg is close to some of the best Montana camping, boating and fishing
by Michele Kadison
From Philipsburg you can steer your Montana vacation toward camping, fishing and boating opportunites, while staying at a fine Montana hotel, in a picturesque setting.
Named after Philip Deidesheimer, the inventor of square-set mine timbering, Philipsburg was settled in 1866 and was known as “the Burg.” The focus of the town was as a trading center for all the nearby settlements as well as the home of the Hope Mill, the first silver mill in Montana. The mill served as a fort when the settlers warred with the local Native Americans.
Philipsburg is presently known as Montana’s First Tourism Community of the Year and has been dubbed one of the “Prettiest Painted Places” in the United States. The town has been renovated and is proud to be a National Historic Business District, with its quintessential shops, businesses, and homes. Architectural highlights include the state’s oldest functioning school, opera house, and jail. Take a tour of the local ghost towns to get a further sense of what the region was like in the latter part of the 1890’s.
Just 10 miles from Philipsburg you will find Georgetown Lake. Here amid the towering mountains you can spend time camping, boating, and fishing. Take some time to prospect at the Sapphire Gallery and to visit the Granite County Museum and Mine Exhibit, home of the Ghost Town Hall of Fame.
