Browning, Montana Vacations
Browning has some of the best Montana cultural tourism
by Michele Kadison
Browning, located inside the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, provides a fascinating opportunity to view Montana’s Native American cultural heritage, within a short distance of the hiking, fishing and backpacking opportunities of Glacier National Park. You’ll find plenty of Montana hotels and lodging in the area as well.
The largest of Montana’s Native American tribes, the Blackfeet Indians have maintained much of their cultural history. You can see many of their customs during special celebrations where they bring forth the beautiful beaded costumes and bright headdresses that highlight their dances and pow wows. Come to Browning during the second week in July to experience North American Indian Days or in August to enjoy the Heart Butte Indian Days.
The Museum of the Plains Indian is a great way to learn more about the Blackfeet Nation. Right near the intersection of US Highways 2 and 89, the museum holds a vast collection of Native American artifacts with exhibits beautifully presented throughout the year. Visit the gift shop to purchase authentic contemporary jewelry and art.
The Blackfeet Heritage Center is another stop to make as well as going on the Blackfeet Historical Site Tour where you can learn about tribal life from prehistoric days right up to the present. The tour takes you to the following sites: Sun Dance, Buffalo Jumps, Teepee Rings, Old North Trail, Old Agency and the Starvation Winter of 1883-84, Holy Family Mission, Meriwether Lewis meets the Blackfeet, Fort Shaw, and Fort McLeod Road. The tours are guided by Blackfeet interpreters and begin at the Museum of the Plains Indian. Take a half or full day mini-bus tour to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the Blackfeet Nation.
Just outside of Browning you will find East Glacier Park and St. Mary, two resort communities that lie on the eastern edge of Glacier National Park.
