Kalispell, Montana Vacations
Kalispell provides access to great Montana Vacation Activities and Glacier Park
by Michele Kadison
Kalispell, Montana is another terrific town to base your Montana vacations out of. Here you’ll find friendly Montana accommodations and vacation rentals, and quick access to places like Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park and Whitefish Mountain Resort. Montana vacation activities such as skiing, rafting, hiking and fishing are all easily accessible from here, with plenty of opportunity for world-class guided tours.
Established in 1891 at a place where railroad founder Charles Conrad felt would be the right spot for
the main railway line junction. He created the Kalispell Townsite Company along with a bank and a 26 room mansion that is one of the historic homes that makes Kalispell so interesting. With its many bed and breakfasts, art centers, and museums, Kalispell is an ideal vacation destination for people interested in both culture and the great outdoors.
Take time to peruse the Hockaday Museum of Art, which was a former library, as well as the Central
School Museum, which was Kalispell’s first school. Walk along Main Street to view the historic buildings that house galleries, artists’ studios, shops and boutiques, restaurants, and a hotel. Then amble through one of the town’s more than 20 parks, many of which contain historic monuments such as the grounds at the Conrad Mansion, Courthouse Park, and Depot Park. Woodland Park is
another favorite, as the city’s largest and most lush. Golfers will be thrilled to try the greens at the Buffalo Golf Course on the land where Conrad’s buffalo herd used to graze.
Flathead Lake is another marvelous destination right outside of Kalispell. This is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, with the lake measuring over 200 square miles and a shoreline of 185 miles. The southern section of the lake sits inside the boundary of the Confederated
Salish and Kootenai Tribes Flathead Reservation.
