Lewistown, Montana Vacations

Lewistown, Montana is one of the state’s lesser known towns, but is a great place to visit for a Montana vacation.

Downtown Lewistown, Montana.

It’s located in central Montana, which, if you’ve never been, you may be thinking “Oh, so there’s no mountains there.” In reality, the town is completely surrounded by mountains, including the Big Snowy Mountains, the Belts, the Highwoods and the Judiths.

All of this mountainous terrain makes for great hunting, hiking, fishing and mountain biking.

On a hot summer day, you may also want to check out Warm Springs,  a natural, pristine spring that runs at a constant 68 degrees. It’s just 15 miles northwest of Lewistown. To get there, drive 9.5 miles north of Lewistown on US Highway 191, turn left at State Highway 81 and drive about 5 miles, then turn right at the Warm Springs sign.

In the center of this friendly little town, you’ll find a couple real gems that make visits here a treat. The Rising Trout serves gourmet coffee, fresh-baked pastries, and has a great open mic night once each month. You’ll find terrific Mexican food at Poor Man’s, some of the best gelatto-style ice cream you’ve ever had at Lolo’s, and an awesome, authentic burger drive-thru at  the Dash-In.

Lewistown is located almost exactly in the center of the state, about an hour and a half to two hours (depending on the weather) north of Billings, Montana.

The Charlie Russell Chew-Choo.

Learn about local history at the Central Montana Museum where you will see many relics of the region’s cowboy past along with many Native American artifacts.  Take the Charlie Russell Chew-Choo to travel over the three 150 foot high trestles and into a half-mile long tunnel, comprising the former Milwaukee Railroad Line.  The trip takes three and a half hours riding on 1950s vintage cars.

Other areas to visit are the Upper Missouri Breaks National Back Country Byway where this 375,000 acre expanse is public land is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.  Visit the Missouri River Breaks National Monument with its diverse ecosystem, and enjoy the rugged landscape that the explorers Lewis and Clark described as the “deserts of America.”  Later the area was referred to by fur traders as the Badlands.
